TEEN ACRONYMS NOT TO LOL ABOUT

Every teen generation has come up with their own language.  The reason for this is obvious, to ensure that adults stay out of teens' business.  My generation sought to add letters to words, exampled in songs such as Nelly's "Hot In Herre" and Christina Aguilera's "Dirrty;" while this new generation expresses an entire sentence in only three letters.  Obviously, this new-fangled language is just another example of the beat going on, but there is something that is unique to today's teen.  According to MSNBC's online article, Teen's Online Lingo Leaves Parents Baffled:

"Jupiter Research reported in 2003 that 70 percent of teenagers said instant messaging was their favorite online activity. And three years ago, the Pew Internet Project reported quite a disparity among parents and their children over Internet use.  While 61 percent of parents said they issued rules about Net use, only 37 percent of teen-agers said they were subjected to Net time restrictions." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6928800/page/2/

This generation has unlimited access to the entire world through ever-advancing communication technology.  While this gives teens many advantages that we never had, there are also many disadvantages.  Sadly, teen slang is no longer just the language of teenagers, but the language of anonymous online predators as well. It is important that parents and educators stay on top of online language and specifically their teen's use of it, in order to fight predators that target teens.
